Central Michigan University, founded in 1892, is a research-intensive institution that offers programs at the bachelor, master, specialist and doctoral levels. More than 100 undergraduate majors and more than 50 graduate majors are available. CMU performs in the top 17% of all national universities for graduation rate performance rank, according to U.S. News and World Report (2007). With an on-campus student population of nearly 20,000, CMU is the fourth largest university in Michigan. Students from non-English speaking countries must present a TOEFL (IBT) score of 79 or higher or an IELTS score of 6.5 or higher to demonstrate English proficiency. Options are available for students who cannot demonstrate English proficiency, including a Bridge program that allows students with no TOEFL or IELTS scores (or very low scores) to be admitted as undergraduates. (See for details.) In addition to English language instruction, among the degree programs especially attractive to international students are: Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, Business Information Systems, Marketing, Computer Science, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, Geographic Information Science, Psychology, Political Science, Public Administration, Sociology, Health Professions and Mathematics. CMU’s main campus is in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. The closest large cities are Chicago, Detroit and Toronto.
