Listed as one of only 40 colleges in Colleges That Change Lives, Guilford is nationally recognized for its academic reputation. The third-oldest coeducational institution in the US, Guilford was founded in 1837 by the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). Retaining a sense of tranquility, safety and tradition, Guilford is located in a medium-sized city of 250,000 in the southern United States. A four-year, residential, liberal arts college, Guilford’s Quaker heritage is still apparent in its emphasis on community equality, diversity, and action for social responsibility. The college maintains average small class sections of 19 students and a student-faculty ratio of 16:1. Promoting an education which values academic excellence and stresses the need in a free society for mature, broadly educated men and women, Guilford values the diversity of its students from 46 states and 23 other countries. Students are encouraged to be creative within the 38 majors and 54 concentrations to develop a program of studies that meets their needs and interests. Guilford has 18 varsity athletic teams, eight for men and eight for women, and competes in NCAA Division III. Guilford is accredited or recognized by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
